ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I enjoy playing with water and colour so watercolour is a perfect media for because it's also challenging. I like the accidental effects and try to incorporate them into my paintings. I generally paint from my photographs on my laptop, which I crop and edit to enhance what I want to express in my paintings. In recent years I have developed a limited palette of transparent watercolour paints, mostly the primary colours of red, yellow and blue, which I blend and layer to create other colours on the paper. Recently I have been painting 'en plein air', which is even more challenging!
I'm trying to capture the beauty of the landscape, while it still exists as places to enjoy and explore. In particular, shorelines are now rapidly changing around the world, becoming more threatened and threatening as floods increase, and more plastics wash up on shore. As the oceans and rivers are warming, seaweed, fish and shellfish are in decline. Where I live, on the Pacific West Coast, young salmon fry are frying in warm creeks while shellfish are cooking right on the beaches!
